Social Sustainability

About Social Sustainability
Social Sustainability in business refers to the impact a company’s operations has on its stakeholders, including employees, customers, and the wider community. Businesses that embrace social sustainability commit to responsible practices that advance social equity, enhance employee and community well-being, and strengthen long-term resilience.

These efforts not only create meaningful societal impact but also strengthen corporate reputation, deepen employee engagement, and build lasting customer and brand loyalty. To champion this, the Social Sustainability Division (SSD) will work closely with SBF’s social impact arm, the SBF Foundation, to raise awareness and accelerate adoption of socially sustainable businesses practices.
FOSTERING SOCIALLY IMPACTFUL BUSINESSES THROUGH POLICY, PROGRAMMES AND PLATFORMS
Together, SBF and SBF Foundation will partner the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, alongside key intermediaries and agencies in the volunteering ecosystem, including the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC), Mendaki, National Council of Social Service (NCSS), National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC), National Youth Council (NYC), People's Association (PA) and SportSG. In support of the SG Cares movement, SBF and the Foundation seek to inspire and enable businesses across Singapore to take purposeful action for the common good.

In 2025, we will launch a new corporate volunteering programme to mobilise businesses in addressing community needs while strengthening employee engagement. The SSD will provide tailored support to companies at different stages of their volunteering journey - whether they are just starting up or scaling up their efforts.

To better understand the current landscape, we will also undertake research into social sustainability and responsible business practices. These studies will uncover what is working, where challenges lie, and how businesses can be better supported in doing good. These insights will inform efforts to strengthen purpose-driven business models, building a better future for both community and commerce in Singapore, and beyond.

Another key challenge businesses face is difficulty in measuring and reporting social impact, largely due to the absence of a unified framework. To address this, SSD will examine global best practices, guidelines, and policies in social sustainability, and develop a set of common metrics that are relevant and practical for Singapore businesses.
